Uchenna Obigwe, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abia state chapter on Friday reacted to allegations circulating the media that he is less concerned to the plight of Abia workers and conspires with the government to neglect the worker’s salary payment and welfare.
As at the time of filling this report, the Abia state government is said to owe secondary school teachers nine month salary arias of 2019.
Meanwhile, the junior secondary school teachers of the state are said to have recently received their 2020 June salary while the senior secondary received last payment of May 2020.
Speaking to Abia Pulse News Online, Obigwe denied the allegation and reaffirm his commitment with Abia workers.
“It is not true, we have clearly spoken, we have been carrying the plight of workers to the government and we pray that God will touch the heart of the political class to listen to our yearnings.
“I am not happy that the teachers are been owed for months, recently we met the governor over teachers salary, not only teachers, we can talk about Abia state university teaching hospital(ABSUTH) Aba, we can talk of hospital management board(HMB), I don’t want to talk about Abia state Polytechnic.
“We are playing the role of women in a nuclear family. If your wife is diplomatic, he will get something from you, that is our situation with Abia government.
While reacting to the allegation that he has comprised standards with the state government, Obigwe said “how can I compromise? I am the workers governor and I am representing them, if I compromise, who will be there to speak for them?
“We are of the working class not the political class. When contract is given to the political class, they get bulk money, they will pocket it in their account and they will not allow it to flow and the masses will suffer.
Obigwe also spoke on the proposed nationwide strike scheduled for September 28.
“Government of the federal republic of Nigeria does not obey court order. You can verify that by many instances that is happening in the country. You cannot push a person and tell him where to land.
“You woke up in the morning to increase the electricity tariff and the fuel pump price without consulting the stake holders, which means that we are not in democracy.
“If the strike is going on in the nation, Abia state will not be found wanting, we have already mobilized, we have already done the needful waiting for Monday, it is only when we get contrary signal from our national leadership that will make us not to go on strike come Monday” .Obigwe added.
